The neon's still pink. The palm trees still bend toward the gulf. And every magazine cover treating GTA 6 as "Vice City 2002 with better lighting" is missing the actual story.

Here's what actually changed.

The economy

1986: Cocaine. Full stop. Tourism existed as a front for laundering. The marina was where boats from the islands came in. Every storefront on Ocean Drive paid protection to one of three families. The Forelli organization ran the docks. The dirty-cop economy was its own income tier.

2026: Pharmaceuticals replace cocaine as the high-margin product. Cuban drug families have been replaced by mortgage-fraud crews running out of shell LLCs. The marina is full of foreign-flagged yachts being sold as tax shelters. The dirty-cop economy got automated into asset forfeiture programs.

The criminal energy is identical. The mechanism is unrecognizable.

The neighborhoods

1986 Vice Beach was Tommy Vercetti's hunting ground — pastel hotels, art deco bars, and the kind of bachelor pads that came with mirrored ceilings. Three blocks of relevance. The rest of the city was background.

2026 Vice Beach is the same three blocks but they're now $4M condos owned by Argentinian crypto miners. The pastel buildings are still there because Miami-Dade Historic Preservation made it illegal to tear them down. The bachelor pads are now Airbnbs. The bars charge $22 for a drink.

The neighborhood didn't change. The people did.

The cars

1986: Stinger, Cheetah, Infernus. Convertibles dominated. Three-button radios. AM/FM. Cigarette lighter as a feature.

2026: EV crossover dominates the visible street fleet. The supercars are still there — they just don't get driven outside of Brickell. Sports cars are owned by people who only post about them. The cars that matter to gameplay will probably be the work trucks and SUVs — utility vehicles for utility crime.

The police

1986 VCPD was visibly corrupt, visibly limited in technology, and visibly outgunned. The five-star system existed because the cops genuinely couldn't catch you most of the time. Helicopters were a luxury.

2026 VCPD has license plate readers on every overpass. Drones for crowd events. Real-time facial recognition cross-referenced against the casino database. A clean getaway in 2026 requires defeating actual surveillance infrastructure, not just outrunning a patrol car.

This will fundamentally change how missions feel. Expect a stealth/disguise mechanic that didn't exist in earlier games.

The music

1986: Original synth-pop, hair metal, freestyle, early hip-hop. The Vice City soundtrack was a cultural argument as much as a playlist.

2026: Reggaeton dominates Miami real life right now. So the radio is going to be Bad Bunny adjacents and Latin trap. Expect a curated hip-hop station, a separate Spanish-language reggaeton station, an old-school rock station for the older audience, and a single talk-radio station for the satire.

The biggest open question: does Rockstar license real 2025-26 artists, or do they build a fictional version of the era like they did with The Setup in GTA V?

The crime

1986: Smuggling, extortion, contract killing. Things you could feel.

2026: All of the above PLUS wire fraud, identity theft, romance scams, crypto rugs, telehealth Medicare scams. The white-collar variety of crime in 2026 makes more money than the violent variety. The challenge for Rockstar is making that play.

Expect at least one heist mission that is fundamentally a phishing operation. Watch for it.

The political backdrop

1986: Reagan-era federal drug enforcement. Cuban Mariel refugees. The cocaine wars. Vice City existed as a Reagan satire wrapped in pastels.

2026: Florida is the cultural front line of every American political fight right now. Rockstar has to write satire that lands on both sides without becoming a culture-war flashpoint itself. That's harder than 1986. Whether they pull it off will define the game's reputation 10 years from now.

What stays the same

Three things carry over from 1986 to 2026 untouched:

  1. Pastel hotels at sunset
  2. The neon palm tree silhouette
  3. The feeling that everyone you meet is running a scam

If Rockstar nails those three, the game lands no matter what else they do.
